Bring Deeper Meaning To Your Holidays

With Christmas just days away, the pressure mounts. Today’s society dictates our home decor as well as our activities - trees, wreaths, Christmas cards, numerous gatherings of friends, family, coworkers, church members.
Most of it has nothing to do with the truth of Christmas.

Biblically, the birth of Christ is barely given notice. Only two of the Gospel writers mention it. And in each of their two chapters, they record completely different things. Compare that with Jesus’ death and resurrection, addressed by all four Gospel writers, spanning 31 chapters, more than a third of the Gospel writings. The records show the place, day and hour of Jesus’ death, but the date and place of His birth are unknown.

If we take the Bible as our guide on spiritual matters, clearly in today’s culture, we give undo attention to Jesus’ supremely humble birth.

With the holiday hurricane of activity in schools, marketplaces, and media, it takes vigilance to “choose what is better” as Jesus instructed Martha, and us too! (Luke 10:42)

Homeward Bound

For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come. Heb. 13:14

A few years ago, my friends traveled the world. Along their journey, they had some great experiences, and some not so great. But at each stop along the way, they purchased various souvenirs – clothing, jewelry, household items. One purchase was a beautiful but large Italian mirror. They couldn’t carry it with them and so had it shipped home. That decision led to other purchases from further destinations being sent home. When they finally arrived home, they had a house full of treasures awaiting them.

Eventually, those treasures lost their newness. The mirror chipped, the souvenirs collected dust. Fortunately for my friends, those tangible items weren’t their true treasures.  Still, they relished the memories made, the relationships forged, the lessons learned.

You're Never Too Old

“You’re never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” C.S. Lewis

Seeing  that quote as a footnote in a friend’s email made me smile. For the past few months, I’d been feeling pretty creaky. And not just in my cartilage-depleted knees. With a milestone birthday approaching, I was really feeling my age. Or was I?

Milestone birthdays have a way of doing that – making you feel old. But when I stopped to evaluate the big picture, I had a realization. I might look old, but I sure don’t feel old.  I’m doing more now than I’ve ever done.

How Can I Know God's Will?

The question of the day – most every day – for those who desire to follow God. How can I know God’s will?  Choices are not always crystal clear no matter how strong our desire to follow God’s plan. The Apostle Paul provides a clue in two of the choices he made.

How God Used A Nightmare to Birth A Ministry

Many of you have heard my story of how God used a nightmare, and I became an accidental abolitionist!

On Being A Jewish Tax Collector and Meeting Jesus At The Beach

I grew up in a Jewish home, a mosh-pit of damaged emotions....

After college, I worked for the U.S. Customs Service in the World Trade Center in New York City. My job was the appraisement and classification of imported merchandise, determining the amount of tariffs and duties that importers would pay the government. I advanced quickly through the ranks and had friends with whom I socialized after work.

On the outside, life seemed good. Inside, the questions and insecurities kept growing. As Charles Dickens said, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
for He has anointed Me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim that
captives will be released,
that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free..."
Luke 4:18

How to Keep the Sabbath in a World That Never Rests

At a Leadership Conference I recently attended, I was challenged to consider observing Sabbath. It’s the fourth Commandment, and the one with by far the most instruction (Deut. 5:6-21) but unlike the other nine, for some reason, our present society considers it optional.

The word “Sabbath” simply means “rest.” In our overscheduled, workaholic culture, taking time to rest seems counter-productive. But in reality, the opposite is true. The conference leader, Pete Scazzaro said, “BEING with God precedes DOING for God.” And the purpose of Sabbath is to rest and BE with God.

How Do You Spend Time With God?

"How do you spend time with God?"

This is the question posed to a few of us contributing writers to Circles of Faith. Editors Elise and Kimberly want to share what it looks like to spend time with God. So often we hear the phrase and know we are supposed to spend time with God, but practically speaking, how do you do that? There are as many different answers as there are people.

So with further ado, click here to Circles of Faith to read In Your Words: How Do You Spend Time With God?.

And please share how YOU spend time with God! You may be able to provide just the right spark for someone looking for a fresh perspective.

Dying to Defensiveness - How Silence Can Make Us More Like Jesus

Last Wednesday, I attended the Ash Wednesday contemplative service at my church. What a blessing to take an hour to simply rest and ponder the sacrifice Jesus made for us, for me. At various stations, we had the opportunity to read Psalms, take communion, remember Gethsemane, etc. When I read this verse, I was moved to tears despite its familiarity:
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face. John 19:1-3

One Word for 2014

Last year, my friend Elise wrote a post that challenged me to come up with one word for 2013. I wrote about it here.

Now I'm thinking about a word for 2014. But before I do, here's a look back at how this "one word concept" impacted me in 2013.

My word was NOW.
I wanted to SAVOR the NOW - not miss the present because I was worried about the future.
   ~ and ~
I wanted to DO it NOW - stop procrastinating, take action, and avoid distraction.

This vase above was a gift from my daughter. I kept it on my desk, its image on my phone home screen, and thought about "NOW" a lot!

In my contemplation, my mind initially went to all the things I procrastinated about and I felt like a failure. Yup. Thankfully, that's not the end of my story.

I thought some more about decisions that I did act upon - in the NOW. Yes, I may have put off some things, but not all things. And some of these decisions fulfilled lifelong aspirations.

One of them set me on a new trajectory in life.

In June, I saw a friend's post on Facebook about human trafficking. Unknown to anyone, my interest in HT was growing. I harbored a desire to get involved in some way to rid the world of slavery, but had no idea how. I began collecting information, supporting friends who were serving with IJM in India, reading fiction and nonfiction on this issue.

When Tanya posted a story from her blog on facebook, I commented adding "I'm interested in this...." Another (totally unrelated) friend commented too, adding "If you do something, let me know." This comment sparked the question in me - "Am I going to do something? Or is this another time where I say I want to do something, but don't actually do anything?"

NOW - my word for 2013.

So in that moment, I did something. I reached out to Tanya, and God took over.

From our meeting across her kitchen table a few months ago, we have grown into Justice Network, an group dedicated to raising awareness of human trafficking and supporting organizations on the front lines of the issue, both local and global.

I've learned more in the past few months than I have in the past few years. Our little group is growing in unimaginable ways (Eph. 3:20-21). There's LOT more I'll be sharing with you about this in January.  Look for it!!!

The purpose of today's post is to share my word for 2014 and to hopefully inspire you to consider adopting a word for your 2014.

For the past 2 weeks, I pondered what my word would be for the new year.

And today it hit me. Just flew into my brain matter, struck a chord in my heart, and lodged there.

"FAITHFULNESS"

I want to not only be a woman of faith, who fully loves God, though that would be enough.

I want to be faithful in the commitments I make, those He calls me to. I want my "yes" to mean "yes." I want to act faithfully, to learn more about this fruit of the Spirit, and to be transformed into the embodiment of faithfulness.

My favorite definition of faithfulness came from Wikipedia of all places!

Faithfulness is the concept of unfailingly remaining loyal to someone or something and putting that loyalty into consistent practice, regardless of extenuating circumstances. It may be applied to a husband or wife does not engage in sexual relationships outside of the marriage, a customer at a restaurant who regularly dines there, or even to God himself with regard to His perpetual love towards His children that is not dependent on their worthiness. Literally, it is the state of being full of faith in the somewhat archaic sense of steady devotion to a person, thing or concept. (emphasis mine)

Is faithfulness "somewhat archaic" as Wikipedia implies?

I hope not. What do you think???

What's YOUR word for 2014?  Please let me know!

Pray for His Presence

I once heard a pastor on the radio encourage his congregation to pray - not for God’s power or for God to do something, but just to pray for His presence.

Those words changed me, changed my prayer perspective. I know that God says to ask, knock, and seek, but what is it that we are asking, knocking, and seeking for? If we ask and seek for His presence, all other matters will fall into proper perspective. We’ll have His peace, even if in a storm. We’ll have His wisdom, even if in a time of indecision. His presence will put to rest our questions, doubts, fears. It will dissipate our anger, resentment, frustration.

Before we make our confessions (examining ourselves) or our supplications (requests for others or ourselves), let’s pursue His presence. Then our prayers will align with His will, and we’ll be asking, knocking, and seeking after what He desires for us.

Before we make our plans, let's seek His presence that we will only do as He directs.

Before we set our feet to the floor in the morning, may we breathe in His presence that we will walk in agreement with Him like synchronized swimmers. Like a dancer following His lead, every movement choreographed according to His design. May our voices speak in perfect harmony with His. Like Moses, may we not move if His Presence does not go with us:

"The LORD replied, 'My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.'
Then Moses said to him, 'If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.'" Ex. 33:14-15

Thank you Lord, for sharing Your presence with us. May we relish it afresh every day, every moment.

Over at Circles of Faith today, you'll find posts on prayer by all the contributing writers. And on facebook, Circles of Faith has a new page devoted to prayer where you can share your requests.

Click here for the Circles of Faith facebook Prayer group.
Starting today, Circles of Faith will be hosting a Facebook Prayer community; a place where we can join together to share our prayer needs and testimonies of God’s provision. It is a forum for us to gather on-line and share what we are believing God for.
